C is a general-purpose computer programming language developed by Dennis Ritchie at Bell Telephone Laboratories between 1969 and 1973. Originally created for Unix system software implementation, C has evolved to be widely used in developing portable application software as well.

Renowned as one of the most prevalent programming languages globally, it offers compatibility with nearly all computer architectures through existing C compilers. Notably, C has significantly influenced other popular languages, such as C++, which emerged as a derivative of C.

Primarily an imperative (procedural) systems implementation language, C aimed to provide direct memory access via uncomplicated compilation processes and efficient mapping of language constructs to machine instructions. With minimal run-time support requirements, C became favored over assembly language for various applications.

Despite its low-level attributes, C encourages cross-platform programming with standards-compliance and portability central to its design. A well-written C program can be compiled across various computer platforms and operating systems with minimal source code changes. Its accessibility spans from embedded microcontrollers to supercomputers.

The development phase of C at Bell Labs spanned from 1969 to 1973, peaking creatively in 1972. The name "C" was derived from "B," an earlier language that initiated from the BCPL programming language. This maturation journey coincided with the evolution of Unix as Ritchie and Thompson transitioned from assembly language on a PDP-7 system towards a PDP-11 environment.

In 1973, due to the integration of struct types, C's capabilities expanded significantly, leading to the majority of the Unix kernel being rewritten in C. This marked a milestone as one of the pioneer operating system kernels shifted from assembly language to a high-level programming language.

Brian Kernighan and Dennis Ritchie authored "The C Programming Language" in 1978. Commonly referred to as the "K&R" book among C programmers, this publication stood as an informal specification for the language for several years. Subsequently, the second edition elaborated on the ANSI C standard introduced later on.
